Photography

Hey Hey guys
Well we've Been talking in class in having a meaning behind what we do with our visuall creations. We'll in high school I took alot of photography classes and when i was taking the class and the pictures I really never had any Theme or deeper meaning to my pictures i just took what i thought was to be cool pictures. Now my teacher always had like a theme such as shutter speed and such things like that but we never really discussed having a deeper meaning besides those subtopics.

I really dont know what I'm going at here but I think I have 2 Points/Questions and really all you guys can try to answer because I would like to know what you think but,

1) does this mean that The photography that I've taken technically doesnt have any artistic meaning behind it

2) How do you make photography that it has a deeper meaning. (At least in my style of photography it seems like it may be hard)

So let me know and it would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Justin Runyon

Justin,

The pictures below are great!

One of the reasons I’m harping so hard on being able to “read” meaning (intended or otherwise) is that we can’t help but create meaning in the work that we do. Somewhere we bought into the idea that meaning had to be in your face and black and white if it was going to have any “purpose for the Kingdom”. Read Psalm 19 sometime: God’s creation is loaded with meaning …speaks volumes of who He is. The question is on us as to whether or not our ears have become too dull the hear it.

Deciding too firmly in advance what your work is “about” can be a problem especially for young artists. Better to ask the work and take your cues from it. Trust me… meaning will come if your looking for it.

As far as the photos you posted are concerned:

I see a contrast of perfect peacefulness, elegance, and violent beauty in the water fall image. What do you see in it?

The fire picture with its stark contrast of red and blue, speaks to me of warmth on a cold night, with more than just a slight risk of getting burned. Perhaps an invitation to take a risk and warm up to something in a world that is stark and cold.... and what’s up with those two ice blue eyes in the distance?

The last one is my favorite: A frozen rope net that looks like a DNA strand under a microscope. There’s something primitive and frighteningly powerful about the frozen grip the ice has on that webbing. There's also much to be said of the simple beauty of design that has a level of meaning all it's own.

As you take your photos you should be hanging them together so that your work as a whole can begin to tell you what you’re about. If you do this I think you‘ll be surprised just how much meaning your work has without you even noticing .

The next step of course is to start noticing as your clicking the shutter.
